Use the platform tool when practical

An in-app call can keep your personal phone number or social account private and may preserve access to platform reporting. Review the service’s controls first, including who can call, whether calls can be blocked and how abuse is reported.

Prepare your background

Remove letters, identity documents, work passes, family photos, prescription labels and objects that reveal your address or routine. A neutral wall or virtual background can reduce accidental disclosure, although virtual effects are not always reliable.

Protect account and device access

Use a unique password and multi-factor authentication where available. Keep the app and device updated. Do not install remote-access software, share a verification code or follow screen-sharing instructions from a match.

Set boundaries before the call

You can decide when to call, how long to stay and what you are willing to discuss. End the call if someone becomes sexual, threatening or manipulative. Never record or share another person’s call without their knowledge and a lawful basis.

Assume recording is possible

Even if an app does not offer recording, another device can capture the screen. Avoid showing anything you would not want copied. Pressure to perform intimate acts, reveal financial information or display identity documents is a reason to leave and report.

Know what video can and cannot tell you

A live conversation may help confirm that a person resembles their photos and can discuss their story consistently. It cannot establish their legal identity, intentions or safety. Continue to control travel, money and first-meeting plans independently.

Set up a lower-risk call

Use a display name that does not expose more than your profile already does, place the camera against a neutral background and close apps that might show private notifications. Tell the other person how long you have and end on time if you want to.

• Is the call taking place through an official feature?
• Are documents, photos and location clues out of view?
• Have camera and microphone permissions been limited?
• Would you be comfortable if part of the call were recorded?
• Can you block and report afterward?

A respectful person will accept a boundary without asking you to prove trust through exposure.
