Use a separate, secure login

Create a unique password and enable multi-factor authentication where available. Consider an email address used for dating and other low-risk sign-ups rather than one that exposes a full name or employer. Never share login or verification codes.

Audit photos before uploading

Look for house numbers, street signs, work badges, school logos, car registrations, tickets, documents, children and other people who did not agree to appear. Image metadata may contain location details, although platforms often remove it; do not depend on that.

Limit profile details

A broad job field and general area can be enough at first. Avoid a precise workplace, home location, commuting pattern, regular timetable or family member’s identifying information. Security-question answers, such as a first school or pet’s full name, do not belong in a profile.

Review device permissions

Check whether the app needs precise or approximate location, contacts, photos, camera and microphone. Grant access only when needed and revisit permissions later. Contact syncing can reveal account use to others or upload an address book depending on the service.

Control discoverability and communication

Understand who can see you, whether distance reveals a small location, who can message and whether read receipts or activity status are optional. Use block and report tools when boundaries are ignored; moving off-platform can remove those controls.

Plan for screenshots and searchability

Profiles and messages can be copied even if the app discourages it. Avoid sending content that would create serious harm if shared. A reverse-image search using your own profile photo can reveal whether the same picture leads directly to a public social account.

Close the loop when you leave

Cancel recurring payments, hide the profile while necessary, request account deletion through the official process and revoke permissions. Review the provider’s privacy policy for access or deletion rights that may apply in your location.

Repeat the audit after changes

Privacy settings can change after an app update, a new feature or a reinstallation. Review them whenever the service adds video, location, contact discovery or social sharing, and when your own work or living situation changes.

• Search your profile name and main photo from outside the account.
• Review precise location and background app access.
• Check active sessions and connected devices.
• Remove old photos and outdated personal details.
• Confirm who can message and see activity status.
• Re-read deletion and data-request instructions.

A profile can be genuine without being fully identifiable. Gradual disclosure leaves room for trust to develop.
